[edit] Five (+) ways to use WIKIs with your students/faculty:

1. Civil War WIKIpedia (i.e. different groups do different topics)

2. REMOTE collaboration (i.e. "pen pals", Alumni contributions)

3. Upper school / Lower school "buddy system"

4. Brainstorming tool ... school issue forum

5. Curriculum planning

6. Inter-disciplinary work (faculty OR students)

7. Experts' forum (comment on what kids do)

8. Archivists... school history

Some notes:

  • you need to find software that will do what you want it to do (admin rights, etc.)

time and location issues • excellent for brainstorming for democratic input and when it's difficult to meet face to face • teaches that to be sure that you have accurate information, you must have several sources • must be careful to prep contibuters about group ownership issues - you lose control of the content once it is published

So... how did we do this? Dean went to Wikia.com and asked (nicely) if we could start a new page. It's free.. but there is no free lunch; it's editable by everyone!
